How it works

The shape of it

Six marks in, one of three answers out

Arizodo is one loop repeated daily. You mark six things against a standard you wrote; each of the three pillars scores the share of its marks you held; the day is the mean of the three, and falls into one of three bands. Advance is worth a point, stagnation nothing, retreat costs one. Points accumulate onto a ladder of nineteen grades, and that is the entire mechanism — everything below is detail on one of those steps.

Each pillar scores the share of its marks you held; the day is the mean of the three. At 0.9 or above the day advances. Above 0.5 it holds. At 0.5 or below it retreats. These numbers are read out of the app's own engine when this page is built.

The app

See it running

Every screen the app has, running its own stylesheet. Tapping a sector rescores the day by the rule set out above.

Working demo. Tap the sectors to see a day rescore, and the tabs along the bottom to move between screens. Sample record, nothing is saved.

How it works

Three pillars, one number

Sleep is a bed time and a wake time, against hours you set. Eat is two marks, clean and fuel: whether the day kept the shape you defined. Move takes walking as the baseline and puts the gym on a weekly quota, settled across the week rather than day by day.

Six marks, checked in a morning phase and an evening phase. The share you hold decides the day.

+1AdvanceAll three pillars held.
0StagnationMost of the day stood up.
–1RetreatThe day came apart.

A day advances at 0.9 or above, holds while it stays above 0.5, and retreats at 0.5 or below. Points never fall below zero, and a grade once reached is kept: retreat spends progress inside the current grade first.

Days close on their own. Any past day can be reopened, and a late edit is marked as an amendment.

A fixed budget of exceptions covers what is external, unforeseeable and not chosen. A fever qualifies; travel belongs in the standard as a clause. Three exceptions with the same cause point to a gap in the standard. When the budget is spent, it is spent.

Nineteen grades carry a name. Past 10 Dan the record counts years instead, struck across the bands where dan never goes — and it has no ceiling.

Black belt at 365 is the anchor. One perfect year, exactly. Every other number on the ladder is derived from it.

The first promotion lands on day nine. The colour grades lengthen geometrically, and brown, at 119 days, is the longest wait below black belt. First dan follows thirty days after black, then roughly one grade every half year. Ten dan is 2,009 points — about five and a half years without a single miss.

Black belt and first dan are kept separate, so the ladder visibly continues past black.

Appearance

Two registers

The switch at the top of this page runs the app's two skins.

A grade is carried by brightness step, ring, shape and label, so a belt reads the same in either.
